Product image lab
Write three different lighting briefs for one product
Explore a campaign mood without changing the product itself.
What you’ll make
Create soft, crisp, and moody lighting studies from the same product reference.
Step by step
- Lock the crop, camera height, product angle, and reference. Create a baseline image before exploring a mood. Without a baseline, you cannot tell whether a new lighting brief improved the composition or merely changed it.
- For a soft study, describe a large diffused light close to the product and a gentle fill on the opposite side. Look for broad highlight transitions and shadows that still show the object resting on the surface.
- For a crisp study, describe a small directional light and a clearly defined cast shadow. Keep the surface simple so shadow edges can do the visual work. Check that the light direction agrees with every visible reflection.
- For a moody study, reduce the fill and place the product against a darker background. Preserve enough edge separation to see the full silhouette. Compare the three studies at the size where the finished image will actually be used.
Example prompt
Same product reference and camera position. Dark charcoal background, a narrow soft light from upper left creating a controlled highlight along the edge, gentle fill revealing the front label, grounded contact shadow, accurate product proportions.
Review your result
Can the label and outline still be understood in the moody version? Does the crisp version reveal useful texture, or just produce a distracting shadow?
If the first attempt misses
For shiny surfaces, request broad controlled reflections rather than adding extra lights. Multiple contradictory highlights make metal and glass look less convincing.
Your next exercise
Write one sentence describing the intended feeling of each version. Select the image that matches your brief, not simply the most dramatic one.
